September 29, 2022 – Newsletter

It’s been another busy and exciting month at Enviroshake and we’re thrilled to share some of the highlights with you. In this newsletter, we’re comparing Enviroshake to metal and cedar shake, but don’t just take it from us, we’re asking property owners what they think.

Enviroshake vs Metal & Hail

After one homeowner experienced a hailstorm that ruined his aluminum standing steam metal roof, he decided it was time to look for a superior alternative that would outlast any weather event. Florida homeowner, Sammy Vaughn, shared his process in searching for a new roofing material:

“I spent several weeks of research looking for a different and superior roof system. My search kept leading me to a synthetic roof system, which I knew nothing about. I kept up my research about this product of which I found 3 producers. After a deep dive into this and several conversations with the 3 manufacturers, I settled in on Enviroshake because of their superior product and 100% warranty against hail, which no one else could beat.

What a good decision this turned out to be! Kristina Lorio at Enviroshake made this decision easy. She is VERY knowledgeable about the product. They also issued a list of certified installers and I chose one fairly close to my location. Dustin Heaps, owner of Coastal Roofing and Waterproofing did a fantastic job on my roof. I could not believe how easy they were to work with and they did a fantastic job. I could not be more satisfied!

I will never use a metal roofing product again on any of my properties. I rarely issue any reviews, but I figured the entire country needs to know about this product and the installer! I rate Enviroshake and Coastal Roofing and Waterproofing 5 out of 5 stars!!”

Downfalls of Metal vs Enviroshake's Solutions

Metal roofs can be extremely noisy during heavy rainfall and hail, and as seen by Sammy, can be significantly damaged by hail and impact. Additionally, metal can expand and contract causing interlocking panel systems to loosen if not fastened properly, and simple foot traffic can cause punctures in the material.

Areas with dead elevations can cause a pooling of water, which when combined with UV rays, causes accelerated oxidation of metal, meaning corrosion and blistering may occur in these areas.

Enviroshake is quiet in weather conditions involving heavy precipitation and withstands impacts from hail and foot traffic. Our products have a level 4 UL 2218 Impact Rating (the highest impact rating available).

Unlike with metal roofing, you will not hear loud creaks or pops from your Enviroshake roof as the temperature changes, and unlike with other synthetics, you don't have to worry about warping, cracking, or—worst of all—loss of tensile strength.

Pooling water combined with UV cannot damage Enviroshake as it is a specially engineered composite material with UV inhibitors in the form of HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers) and thermo-stabilizers that stop thermal oxidation. Enviroshake products also have less than 2% moisture absorption. Enviroshake maintains its appearance and physical properties for a lifetime even in humid, saline environments (oceanic regions).

Enviroshake vs Cedar & Fire

The Quaaout Lodge & Talking Rock Golf Resort located in Chase, British Columbia is a 100% indigenous owned and operated lakefront resort with an award-winning golf course, a restaurant, day-spa, conference facility, and a 70-room hotel.

In May 2022, the hotel experienced a devastating structural fire that resulted in the loss of the entire guest room wing. We spoke with Director of Operations & Facilities, Rhys Laug, to hear more about the damages they experienced at the resort earlier this year and how the adjacent Enviroshake roof performed throughout the incident:

“We were fortunate on the day of the fire that the weather conditions were relatively calm, limiting the blowing of embers away from the main fire. We had a major concern about the conference centre roof which still has the aging cedar shake sections. Ensuring this section of the building was kept wet was a real concern for the fire response. Due to their incredible efforts, the structural loss was limited to just the hotel rooms wing, saving the main lobby, restaurant, spa, and conference centre.

The lobby section of the building was directly adjacent to the burning guest wing, separated by a concrete block firewall. Had the lobby and restaurant shake roofs not been replaced with Enviroshake there is a very high probability that we could have lost the entire building complex if embers or radiant heat had ignited wood shake.

Though separated from the active fire, embers, ash, and debris did fall on the Enviroshake roof, but no signs of burning have been observed on the shake. Following the fire there have been occasions during windstorms that debris such as metal flashing has blown free of the fire impacted ruins and landed on the Enviroshake roof without damaging the tiles.

We will be replacing the remaining cedar shake sections of roofing on our conference centre with the same Enviroshake product. As a rural property located in a region subject to wildfires, the Enviroshake is a brilliant fire-smart product with great curb appeal and long service-life.”

FAQs

Do I need snow guards?

If you live in an area that receives snow, we highly recommend installing snow guards.

Snow guards protect against damage to the areas below. It is especially important to install snow guards above entryways, walkways, gathering areas, landscaping, parking, ground-mounted mechanicals, lower roofs, valleys, crickets, gutters, and roof vents.

Snow guards are specifically designed to prevent entire roof loads of snow from avalanching all at once, which can cause serious damage to any structures, landscaping, vehicles, and people in the area of impact.

We are proud to offer Alpine SnowGuards as an accessory to your Enviroshake roofing system.

Contact your territory manager today to order your Alpine SnowGuards before the winter.
