Warning:
Do not proceed with installation of the Enviroshake®
roof until you have thoroughly read these instructions and reviewed
the installation diagrams. If you have any questions or concerns
related to the installation procedures outlined below, please call
our toll free number (1.866.423.3302) for assistance BEFORE starting
your project. An installation video is available for viewing online
at www.enviroshake.com
or by calling the toll free number. Wellington Polymer Technology
Inc. (WPTI) is not responsible for any costs incurred by the customer
associated with improper installation procedures.
Enviroshake®
is designed to replicate the look of natural weathered cedar. No
two shakes are exactly alike and will vary in shading due to the
unique materials and manufacturing process employed by Wellington
Polymer Technology Inc. It is therefore
required that the installer open and thoroughly mix (“shuffle”)
the contents of a minimum of 10 to 15 bundles at a time on the ground
before they are delivered up to the roof and apply the shakes from
this mix at random, as you would do with real cedar, to insure a
blended natural look on the roof. Select these bundles at random
by taking some from each of the pallets you received with your order
to further vary the mix. Do not begin installation until you have
received your order in its entirety and the product has been shuffled.
Wellington Polymer Technology Inc. recommends that snow guard devices
be installed in conjunction with Enviroshake®
in areas where there is a significant risk of snowfall accumulation
and the possibility that a buildup of snow could slide off the roof
causing inconvenience or harm to life and property. Please consult
with your roofing contractor regarding the risk factor in your
area and the appropriateness of installing these devices on your
home.
The following is intended as a guide to the installation of Enviroshake®.
Where applicable, local building code requirements will always take
precedence and must be adhered to.
UNDERLAYMENT
Before applying the underlayment, nail a drip edge along the eaves.
Ice/water barrier material (36 in.) is then placed on the lower
portion of the roof overlapping the drip edge. Cover the area of
roof above the ice and water barrier with 15 pound felt* with the
bottom edge of the felt overlapping the ice and water barrier. After
the felt is laid, nail drip edges along the rakes. Nail the top
edges of the felt strips into the sheathing every 6 feet or so.
Enviroshake®
is typically installed in straight, single courses at a 9”
exposure. The “starter course” is a row of any 12”
wide Enviroshake®. The butt (thick) end of the starter course should project
½” beyond the fascia/drip edge. It is important for
the first course of shakes to be straight. To align, let the first
one overhang the drip edge and nail it down. Place another shake
the same way at the other end of the roof. Tack a string to the
butt end of both shakes and align the butts of the intervening shakes
on the string. To insure that your courses remain straight,
snap a chalk line every course. Space the shakes 3/8”
apart (similar to spacing on split shakes). Nail where indicated
by the “O” mark on the nailing strip of each shake.
Apply a second course of shakes directly over the starter course
so the butt of the starter course is even with the butt
of the second course. The joint between 2 shakes in one
course should never be closer than 1 ½” to a joint
below or above it. This also applies to shakes with simulated joints
(as found in our 5-7 split- shake profile, for example).
Beginning with the first full course of shakes, apply an 18”
strip of 15 pound felt* over the top portion of the shake. The bottom
edge of the felt should be positioned 17” up from the butt
(so felt covers the top 3” of the shake), and continue up
the roof, laying felt over the top portion of each consecutive row
of shakes. Snap shakes on simulated keyway periodically and install
individual snapped pieces to further vary the widths and avoid creating
a diagonal pattern as you work your way up the roof. Do a visual
check from the ground every few courses.
Note: It is important not to exceed a 9” exposure.
Stainless steel nails are preferred for longevity however the use
of hot dipped galvanized or electro-galvanized roofing nails is
acceptable. Shakes are secured with 2 nails, no matter how wide
the shakes are. (i.e. 4-8 split shakes would therefore require
4 nails). Always nail where indicated by the “O”
mark on the nailing strip. It is important that the head of the
nail not be driven below the top surface of the shake at any time.
If you are using a power-nailer, adjust the setting to prevent this
situation from occurring.
When you nail the final 2 courses on the ridge, the ends will extend
above the ridge. Snap a chalk line flush with the ridge and cut
all the shakes at once with the circular saw.
Shakes must be cut in order to fit properly around vents, along
the rake, in valleys, and beside flashing. Shakes should be cut
with a circular saw for straight lines or with a saber saw for curves.
Use only uncut factory edges kept flush along rake/gable ends.
*Note: In some areas, 30 pound felt is required. As an
alternative to felt, an approved plasticized type underlayment may
be used where building codes permit. Please check your local building
code for requirements in your specific region .
VALLEY/RIDGE CAPS
Use 24” wide W-flashing (recommended minimum 24 gauge) in
the valleys. Copper is recommended for added longevity, however
galvanized or painted aluminum is acceptable. Apply ice and water
barrier material (36”) in the valley and along the rakes prior
to installing the flashing. Care should be taken not to nail through
shakes too close to the edge along valleys. To keep shakes along
the valleys straight, use a 1” x 4” board as a guide.
Place the board in the valley, one side flush against the dividing
ridge in the middle. This will provide an ample space for runoff
on both sides of the valley. Shakes on the left side of the valley
have to be cut individually as you arrive at the end of each course.
Follow the same procedure for the right side. Lay the last shake
at the valley over the 1 x 4, score a line across the shake and
cut. Position the 1 x 4 and lay out the bottom shake. Mark and cut,
then use it as a pattern to cut all the other shakes, several at
a time. Select full 12” shakes for this. If not using a ridge
vent, cover the ridge with ice and water barrier material prior
to applying the caps. Ridge caps are maximum 9” exposure and
are fastened in a similar manner with 2 nails (min. 2 1/2”).
Caution –
Do not walk on an Enviroshake®
roof when moisture/frost is present as the roof surface will be
slippery and greatly increases the risk of a slip and fall.
SPEC
SHEET – Enviroshake®
A Composite Cellulosic Fibre and Polymer
Engineered roofing Material |
| Colour: |
Dark Brown/Grey. Within three to
nine months the product will “silver” similar
to a cedar roof. |
| Contour: |
The exposed surface is striated, maximum
9” exposure, up from the butt end to the nailing strip
(nailing points indicated by “O”) and is flat
and smooth to the tapered end. The underside of the shake
is flat with hollow recesses. |
| Dimensions: |
Enviroshake®
comes in widths of 12”, 4”- 8”, 8”-
4”, 7”- 5”, 5”- 7”, and 6”-
6” with a length of 20”. Each bundle is comprised
of shakes which have the appearance of random widths that
can be further separated by breaking them along the simulated
key-way. Each shake is tapered and measures approximately
½“ at the butt end and narrows to approximately
1/8” (resembling a taper-split cedar product). The shakes
are bundled with white strapping bearing the Enviroshake®
script, labeled and shrink-wrapped on skids (7 square/skid)
for shipping. Each bundle contains 26 pieces of varied widths.
There are 5 bundles to a “square”. Ridge/Hip caps
are a 12” wide one-piece shake, custom formed to the
specification of the roofslope and installed at the recommended
maximum 9” exposure. |
| Coverage: |
5 bundles (1 square) covers 100 square feet for the
manufacturer recommended 4/12 slope (or greater) at the maximum
9” exposure. This maximum exposure applies to WPTI shakes
not less than 20” long. There is no limit on the maximum
slope. To determine the number of ridge or hip caps required
for a particular pitch, divide the total linear feet by .75
(i.e. 15 feet of ridge/hip divided by .75 equals 20 caps). |
| Installation: |
The installation of the WPTI Enviroshake®
is basically the same as applies to installing wood shingles
and hand-split shakes. Normal code requirements must be applied
regarding material standards, fastening, and flashing at intersections
when installing the WPTI Enviroshake®
as the roof covering in a roof covering system. Regular 11/2”
(min) stainless, electroplated or non-corrosive “large
head” roofing nails and a power-nailer is suitable for
use in installation. |
| Weight: |
Enviroshake®
weighs approximately 300lbs per Square. (100 square feet of
coverage at max. 9” exposure) |
| Storage: |
Do not stack more than 2 skids high. |
